CEE Seminar: Manufactured Nanomaterials in Soils: Bacteria, Plants & Interactions

Abstract: Manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) can enter soils via various routes including agricultural applications and waste disposal. Questions have included: what are the potential effects of MNMs to soil microbial communities, plants and plant-microbe interactions that underpin many ecosystem services? Results with some answers are presented, drawing upon bacterial, soil and soybean cultivation research conducted within the University of California Center for the Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (UC CEIN).
BIo: Patricia (Trish) Holden is the director of the UCSB Natural Reserve System. Her background is in civil/environmental engineering and soil microbiology, and her research straddles these fields. Descriptions of current projects are described on her research website.
