Feb. 11, 2025 - The UC Irvine student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recently received three awards commending their hands-on approach to learning and teaching engineering. The IEEE is an organization for technical professionals dedicated to promoting technological innovation within engineering and creating a community through research, conferences and education.
The UCI student organization received the Silver Darrel Chong Student Activity Award in November 2024, a global-level accolade, for the second year in a row; in 2023 they were awarded Bronze. Both years, UCI students were recognized for Open Project Space, a student-led electronics course for beginners. The consecutive win highlights UCI students’ persistence in maintaining and building the program.
UCI IEEE also received two regional recognitions: the Regional Exemplary Student Branch Award in November and the Region 6 Outstanding Large Student Branch in January. The latter is awarded to only one student branch in the Western U.S., and UCI’s organization was cited for exhibiting “outstanding activities and contributions in promoting technical, professional and social development of its members.”
UCI’s student branch is led by President Neel Ramesh, a fourth-year computer science and engineering major, and a 32-member board. Around 140 students participate in IEEE-UCI programs, including Open Project Space and Micromouse, a robotics competition where students design and develop a computer mouse for a maze contest. Students interested in participating in either program are required to apply during the fall quarter.
“All students involved in the club show passion for everything the club embodies and our officer’s dedication to providing the best experience possible to students has allowed us to continue to stay successful,” said Ramesh of the recent accolades.
