Association for Computing Machinery Selects Markopoulou as Fellow
Jan. 21, 2026 - The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has named Athina Markopoulou as one of 71 ACM Fellows for 2025. The fellows program recognizes the top 1% of ACM members for their outstanding accomplishments.
Markopoulou, professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences and director of the UCI Division of CALIT2, was cited for her “contributions to internet measurement and privacy enhancing technologies.”
Her research interests are in the broad area of networking, with a current focus on privacy and data transparency. In addition to serving as director of Calit2@UCI, Markopoulou is the lead PI for two center-scale research projects: ProperData – an NSF SaTC Frontiers center on “Protecting Personal Data on the Internet,” and the Samueli’s School Eng+Society Institute on AI. Both are large interdisciplinary research efforts at the interface of technology and society.
Through ProperData, the team has been working to protect citizens’ online privacy through a combined technical and policy approach. The center develops privacy-enhancing technologies that can be applied on end-devices or at the network edge. These enable users to understand what personal data are collected, how they are shared and used, and how to exercise their rights under privacy laws. After finding problematic data practices across web browsers, mobile devices, voice assistants, Internet-of-Things devices, and virtual and augmented reality, they created solutions and engaged with policymakers and enforcement agencies, such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), to use their technologies to hold companies accountable.
“I am honored to be elected ACM Fellow,” said Markopoulou. “I am particularly excited that the award recognizes our relatively recent work on privacy, which would not have been possible without my research group and my collaborators in ProperData.”
The 2025 ACM Fellows will be formally recognized during an awards banquet on June 13 in San Francisco.
