CEE Seminar: UV-based Treatment Processes for Treatment of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Context of Water Reuse
Assistant Professor

Oklahoma State University, Stillwater
Abstract: Growing population and increasing urbanization have severely stressed sources of fresh water resources around the world. To meet increasing demands, existing water supplies are being augmented with alternate water sources, including recycled water from municipal and agricultural wastewater. However, contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) continue to persist in treated effluents, and recovered wastewater must be further treated in advanced engineered systems. This talk presents the role of UV-based processes for CEC treatment in engineered systems (such as wastewater treatment plans and advanced water treatment systems) and semi-engineered systems (such as lagoons, wetlands and oxidation ditches).
Bio: Kiranmayi Mangalgiri is an assistant professor in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at Oklahoma State University. Her research interests lie at the intersection of determining the occurrence and fate of priority contaminants of emerging concern in natural and engineered systems, and the development of treatment strategies for contaminant remediation in water and waste streams. She is the recipient of the 2019-2021 UC Riverside Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship. She holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University and a doctorate in environmental engineering from University of Maryland Baltimore County.
